A real life coastguard came to St. Mary's!

11th Oct 2019

Today was a very exciting day in St.Mary's! We had a visit from a real life Coast guard! Mr Brian Gillespie is a Coast Guard for the RNLI based in Bundoran and he paid us a very special visit today. Brian is Sean Durnell's uncle and when he heard the P2 and P3 children were studying "Rescue at Sea" for their topic this term he very gladly offered to come and speak to the children.

The boys and girls learnt some really interesting things about being a Coast Guard and how to keep safe at the beach. They asked Brian some really interesting questions and were amazed by the videos of training rescues at sea that Brian showed us. Mrs Gawronska dressed up as a Coast Guard and demonstrated how to use the life jacket ! We are very thankful to have volunteers like Brian who train to become Coast Guards and ensure the safety of so many people who visit the beach and enter the water. The words the children used to describe Brian were "brave" and " a hero"! Thank you Brian for coming to St. Mary's today and to Sean and Mary Durnell for organising it. Learning really came to life today in St.Mary's!
