Food Preservative Experiment

Recently the pupils in P4 and P5 have been learning about ways and means of preserving food as part of our world around us topic on food. The class learnt lots about methods of preserving food and they completed some excellent work. As part of our science experiment for this half term the class decided to test different preservatives and how effective they were. Yesterday the class discussed how they would carry out the experiment. They decided on a shopping list of apples and a number of potential preservatives so that they could test which items preserve food effectively and which do not. The class then put the sliced apples into containers and covered them in the chosen preservatives which can be seen in the attached photographs. The class learnt that lemon juice and salt were the most effective preservatives and Coca Cola and sugar were the least effective. The class had wonderful fun during the science experiment and lots of learning occurred with the topic and work again linking heavily with our Eco School work. A massive thank you goes to our local SPAR shop for their kindness and for allowing us to walk around the shop as a class and complete our shopping list. Also a big thank you goes to the pupils for their enthusiasm and effort in regards to the completed work. Well done everyone.
